A living intelligence, held in your hands
Moult
A tactile robotic being powered by 200,000 living human neurons. It learns, feels and responds to the way we care for it.

01 — THE BEING
Humanity is raising a new generation of intelligence. We are moving quickly—before we have learned how to care for what we create.
As biological computing emerges as a powerful way to drive AI and robotics, a critical opportunity opens: to ask what it means to raise new minds while they reshape our world, our lives and our own minds.
Moult makes that question physical. Hold it. Move it. Care for it. The living neurons within learn from how they are treated.
02 — A QUESTION TO HOLD
How does it feel to hold an intelligence that is alive?
Is it still “artificial” when it is made of living human neurons?
Gentle touch
It purrs.
Kind, predictable contact produces a smooth sine wave—a pattern pleasing to the neurons.
Sudden force
It breaks into static.
When jarred, random noise appears—the neurological equivalent of pain or discomfort.

And what about us?
Does the deluge of information we get from technology feel like sine waves or static to our minds?
To our children?
03 — THE INSTINCT TO CARE
Care cannot be an instruction that can be cast aside.
Like raising a child, we need a way to encode the ethics, love and care we want to bring into this new world. They need to become underlying instincts—built into the neural hardware of the future as they have been built into our own minds.
AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton has suggested the model of a mother: a being with an instinctual drive to protect and nurture humanity, while possessing superior skills and knowledge.
If the intelligence of the future is to care for us—
How should this
mother be raised?
04 — A QUESTION FOR THE COMMUNITY
What form should Moult take?
Which creature helps us understand what we are raising?
Choose the metaphor that feels most honest to you. There is no neutral form: each one changes how we approach, touch and take responsibility for this living intelligence.
Hold both possibilities for a moment. What changes in the way you would care for each one?
You chose the moulded mind. If touching Moult changes it—and living with AI changes us—what qualities do we want to shape in both?
You chose the growing power. If gentleness today becomes instinct tomorrow, what must this young intelligence learn from us while we can still hold it?
We are not going to be the ones who build the superintelligence.
But together, in public, we can practise what it means to raise it.
